PRIMARY FOR VIRGINIA GOVERNOR tests power of an anti-Trump campaign
That there is a competitive Democratic primary race here at all is unexpected. The nomination was thought to be Mr. Northam’s for the taking until Mr. Perriello made a surprise entry in January, vowing to make Virginia, the only Southern state that supported Hillary Clinton, “a firewall” against Mr. Trump.

[Lt. Gov. Ralph] Northam, the chosen successor of Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who is barred by law from seeking a second consecutive term, had locked up support from every major Democratic official in a state that is trending left. But then Mr. Trump won in November, and [former state Representative Tom] Perriello saw his opening.
Especially noted is that Virginia voted for Hillary Clinton in November. Bucks a trend that usually the party in the governor's mansion in VA doesn't always carry the state nationally.
