PRIMARY FOR VIRGINIA GOVERNOR tests power of an anti-Trump campaign
That there is a competitive Democratic primary race here at all is unexpected. The nomination was thought to be Mr. Northam’s for the taking until Mr. Perriello made a surprise entry in January, vowing to make Virginia, the only Southern state that supported Hillary Clinton, “a firewall” against Mr. Trump.Especially noted is that Virginia voted for Hillary Clinton in November. Bucks a trend that usually the party in the governor's mansion in VA doesn't always carry the state nationally.
[Lt. Gov. Ralph] Northam, the chosen successor of Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who is barred by law from seeking a second consecutive term, had locked up support from every major Democratic official in a state that is trending left. But then Mr. Trump won in November, and [former state Representative Tom] Perriello saw his opening.
